MLK Day with Service & Reflection

MCMD will collect items for Ludington Cares Boxes, while sharing MLK

poster art, readings & song in front of Ludington Library, 2-4pm, Jan. 20

Ludington, MI: The Mason County Michigan Democratic Party (MCMD) invites the community to visit in front of the Ludington Library Jan. 20 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as we recognize the 30th anniversary of this National Day of Service. MCMD will share Dr. King’s compelling words and history in poster art, song, and a reading of his “I Have a Dream” speech.

As a show of service, MCMD will collect items for Ludington Cares, which has five care boxes throughout Mason County. Bambi Marie Malone created the first care box in 2017 in front of the Ludington Library, with four additional boxes in Scottville, Custer, Fountain, and Free Soil. For those requiring a little extra help, “take what you need, give when you can,” is the refrain on each box. Supplies that are difficult to come by like personal toiletries, dish soap, and cleaning products are among the preferred donations. Hats, gloves and socks also are welcome.

“This is a compelling example of what one person can do in our community,” recognizes Liz Kannon, MCMD Chair. “Whether you plan on cleaning up a public space, mentoring a young person, or assisting those who are food insecure or unhoused, what each of us do makes a world of difference. MLK Day is an opportunity to reflect on the ways we can each help make our community a better place.”

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities, explains AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. For 30 years, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact has increased as more Americans embrace the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving our communities.

We invite neighbors to stop by with an item to donate for Ludington Cares and visit with the Mason County MI Democrats as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through art, fellowship, and service.
